Mineshaft

Bleat on,
tight little chest
my elbows press the walls
if I just move my knee up
slowly and place it so --
a moment’s breathing space may be...

down the mine,
pit props snap like pencils
rocks strain and tense --
whispers and shrieks
flutter severed speechless tunnels

Davy lamp extinct.

If I just tense the rib muscles
lungs may admit some air --
air is partially composed
of oxygen...

tongue, a leathery vultures neck
rasps in its little cave
water bottle at my belt, impossible
to reach, let alone...

the tensile strength of rock is...
too close-- must turn skull to left

On the mountain top are white
daisies nodding in the breeze,
sweet-scented alpine strawberries, so small
a tousle-haired child could squeeze
a red smudge, soon forgotten
